Certification Guideline 50
SUBJECT
Additional Occupational Instructional Area Certification
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
Certification may be granted for an additional
occupational instructional area when an individual is currently certified and
has two years of occupational experience related to that instructional area.
The relatedness of the occupational experience will be determined by the President or designee. A request for certification for an individual
with related occupational experience under TCS 3.04(6) must include the following
items:
- Identification of the relationship between the occupational experience
and the job titles and job duties shown on the appropriate occupational experience
document for the additional instructional area.
- Verification of two years of related occupational experience
that may include up to one year of education/training related to the instructional
area. Forty hours of non-credit training will equal one credit. One credit of
training will be recognized as 110 hours of occupational experience.
- A plan sufficient to allow renewal each certification period
to ensure that the person acquires education and training for the occupation
and 12 months of occupational experience specific to the area. This plan requiring
approval of the State Director or designee shall be developed by the individual
for whom certification is requested and the District Certification Officer.
This certification may be renewed by completing two months of appropriate occupational
experience each renewal period.

EXAMPLE
Jim currently holds Provisional certification for instructional area 804 as a math instructor.
He holds a baccalaureate degree with a major in mathematics. He also has a vocational
diploma as a small engine mechanic and two years (4,000 hours) of verified occupational
experience as a small engine mechanic. He is eligible for certification for
instructional area 461 (Small Engine Chassis Mechanic), but he does not currently
hold certification for the 461 area.
Jim wants to obtain certification for instructional area 404 (Automobile -
Mechanical). He has submitted information concerning the relationship between
the 461 area and the 404 area. The small engine mechanic experience was submitted
as verified occupational experience when the 804 certification was obtained.
He has also developed a plan which will provide an additional 12 months of occupational
experience that will be specific to the 404 area. The District Certification
Officer assisted him in the development of this plan. The State Director or
designee will determine relatedness of the occupational experience and acceptance
of the plan. If accepted, Provisional certification will be granted for instructional
area 404 with Requirement 63 outstanding.
