Certification Guideline 64
SUBJECT
Use of Courses for Counseling Certification
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
See Chapter TCS 3.10 Counseling Certification for allowable requirements for academic
preparation for Counselors:
http://systemattic.wtcsystem.edu/Certification/Cert/code/code3-10.htm
Guidance and counseling courses cover a range of offerings including educational guidance
and counseling, vocational rehabilitation counseling, and marriage and family
counseling. Courses completed in the above areas would be recognized and counted
toward a degree in guidance and counseling. Courses completed in other counseling
related areas such as Social Work or Psychology must be accompanied by a letter
from a department chair of a college or university indicating they would be accepted
toward a guidance and counseling degree.
RATIONALE
The role of the counselor varies from district to district, which may require
an emphasis in a specific type of counseling, whether it is personal or vocational
counseling. This guideline allows flexibility for districts to hire the person
with the most appropriate academic background.
Implemented: July 2002
