Certification Guideline 52
SUBJECT
Training for Occupational Subject Instructors
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
District Certification Officers will make the determination of what is considered
appropriate training for occupational subject instructors. Documentation of appropriate
training related to the instructional area of the assignment must be submitted
in support of certification requests.
Acceptable documentation to support the instructional assignment includes the following items:
- Transcript showing coursework or an educational degree.
- Certificate documenting completion of formal training.
- Completion of an apprenticeship in the related program.
- License in the program, such as a licensed electrician.
- Military service training.
- Professional recognition, such as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Professional association training, such as the American Institute of Banking.
- Corporate or vendor training.
- Employer's/supervisor's statement regarding the type and quantity of training
provided to the individual.
- Instructor's statement regarding the type and quantity of training received,
which has been signed by the District Certification Officer.
Training which would not be recognized as sufficient for an instructional area
may be recognized as sufficient for certification for a single course. This is
consistent with recognizing some occupational experience as sufficient for a course,
but not supporting certification for a program.
Non-transcripted training may satisfy the training requirement in the code,
while not contributing towards the baccalaureate equivalency. Forty hours of
non-transcripted training, properly documented, is equal to one credit.
If
the non-transcripted training cannot be properly documented, including the actual
number of hours, it will not be recognized towards the baccalaureate equivalency.
For more information about degree equivalency, see Guideline 23 at:

EXAMPLE
An individual hired to teach Supervision
Management provides a transcript showing a baccalaureate degree in Business
Administration which is documentation of appropriate training. This training
and two years of appropriate occupational experience will allow certification.
EXAMPLE
An individual is hired to teach Electronic
Servicing and provides a statement from his employer documenting training received
while employed as an electronics technician. This is documentation of appropriate
training. This training and sufficient occupational experience to equal 14,000
hours will allow certification.
RATIONALE
Individuals may obtain appropriate training
in a variety of ways. In some instances, it may be necessary to have the individual
identify the type and quantity of training. The District Certification Officer
will need to take reasonable steps to verify the accuracy of these statements.
