Certification Guideline 57

SUBJECT
Exceptional Education Needs Certification

GUIDELINE DEFINITION
Individuals meeting all the necessary standards for certification as an instructor and the criteria for instructional area 873 Exceptional Education Needs found at http://systemattic.wtcsystem.edu/certification/occexp/873-00-0.htm will be granted certification as an 873 instructor. An 873 instructor may function as a lead instructor only for courses numbered under instructional area 873. The 873 instructor may also function as a team instructor in any other course offered as part of an associate degree or technical diploma program.

EXAMPLE
April holds 873 certification as an instructor. The district has mainstreamed exceptional education needs students into the 442 (Welding), 420 (Machine Shop), and 303 (Food Preparation) programs. April participates as a team instructor in courses that are part of these three programs. She supports the efforts of the lead instructor for each course and helps the students being mainstreamed. The 873 certification will be accepted as appropriate certification when staff accounting records are matched against the certification files since April is serving as a team instructor.

RATIONALE
Mainstreaming of exceptional education needs students is a method of offering instruction. The regular occupational and academic instructors may be able to adequately meet the needs of students being mainstreamed. There may be other instances where the needs of students being mainstreamed can be met by providing an aide to the instructor. There may also be instances where district management may want to provide an individual who has received specialized training as an instructor to help the occupational or academic instructor.
