Certification Guideline 13

SUBJECT
Renewal of Provisional Certificates

GUIDELINE DEFINITION
The normal requirement for renewal of a Provisional certificate is the completion of six semester credits (or equivalent district in-service activities) that meet outstanding educational requirements and/or occupational experience.

There may be circumstances where other training or education may be required to meet external agency or district needs. The written pre-approval of the individual's supervisor and District Certification Officer will be required if some of the activities for renewal do not meet outstanding educational requirements and/or occupational experience. A copy of this written approval must be submitted with the request for renewal and must be supported by transcripts or verification of approved in-service activity.

All individuals, however, will be required to complete a minimum of two credits of a course or equivalent in-service activity that satisfies an educational requirement.

EXAMPLE OF EXTERNAL AGENCY NEED
Sue holds Provisional certification as a nurse. She is required by the State Board of Nursing to make progress in obtaining a Master's Degree. Sue asks for approval to take four credits that will count towards her future Master's Degree. The course does not address her remaining educational requirements. Her immediate supervisor and the District Certification Officer approve her request. A copy of this approval is submitted along with transcripts verifying two credits of educational requirements and four credits that apply to the Master's Degree for renewal of her Provisional certification. The certification is renewed.

EXAMPLE OF DISTRICT NEED
Kenny holds Provisional certification for 107 CIS. The district is expanding the CIS offerings. Therefore, Kenny needs to obtain CISCO certification. Kenny requests approval to submit 80 hours of training from the CISCO Academy to apply toward renewal. His immediate supervisor and the District Certification Officer approve his request. A copy of this approval is submitted along with transcripts verifying four credits of educational requirements and verification of 80 hours of CISCO training for renewal of his Provisional certification. The certification is renewed.
