Certification Guideline 25
SUBJECT
Occupational Experience as a Teacher Aide
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
Individuals employed as a teacher aide or lab aide in the Wisconsin Technical
College System (WTCS) may utilize this work experience to meet the baccalaureate
degree equivalency.
OCCUPATIONAL INSTRUCTORS
Occupational experience combined with education and training preparing a person
for the occupation totaling 7 years or 14,000 hours is equivalent to a baccalaureate
degree. When establishing the baccalaureate degree equivalency for occupational
instructors, a portion of an individual's experience as a teacher aide or lab
aide in the WTCS may be recognized under the following conditions:
- A minimum of 4,000 hours of appropriate occupational experience must come
from business and industry.
- The remaining equivalency hours of work experience may include hours worked
as a teacher aide or lab aide, provided this type of work is done in business
and industry.
- The hours and tasks must be documented.
EXAMPLE
Mary received an Associate Degree in Accounting and then spent twenty-four months
working full-time as an Accountant. Since then she has been employed by the
technical college as a teacher aide for ten years. The District Certification
Officer has documented that approximately twenty percent of her time is spent
performing the same type of tasks that are performed by accountants in business
and industry. This experience would be recognized towards the baccalaureate
equivalency requirement and would allow her to be certified as an Accounting
instructor.
