Certification Guideline 37

SUBJECT
Occupational Experience Verification

GUIDELINE DEFINITION
When requesting certification for an individual, Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) districts shall attempt to obtain information relating to the employment of the individual from previous employers. This information shall include dates of employment, job title and/or duties, and the amount of time employed - hours per week, etc. Discharge papers may be used to document military service. In those instances when this information cannot be obtained from previous employers and in those instances involving self-employment, it will be acceptable for the individual to complete the district's verification of occupational experience form. The District Certification Officer shall also sign this verification of occupational experience form after the district has taken reasonable action to verify the accuracy of the information given by the individual.

EXAMPLE
None

RATIONALE
There are times when verification of occupational experience cannot be obtained because the business no longer exists, or the verification of occupational experience is a result of the individual being self-employed. There are also occasions when a business cannot furnish the complete information necessary - such as total hours of employment. This information is critical to the certification process. Various avenues are available to the District Certification Officer in seeking to substantiate information provided by the individual. These avenues include:
The responsibility for the accuracy of the information belongs to the district. If the district later finds that the information was not accurate, the individual's certification can be revoked.
