Certification Guideline 44
SUBJECT
Education Requirements for Part-Time Approval -In-Service Activities
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
Each District Certification Committee will approve and publish a list of Part-Time
Approval in-service activities meeting the following criteria:
- The in-service will consist of structured activity that is at least ten
hours in length.
- The activity will include a learner assessment component.
- The activity addresses the competencies from one or more of the seven
approved certification courses.
An individual wishing to pursue an activity not included on the published list must secure approval from the
District Certification Committee. The District Certification Committee will base its decision on the three criteria
listed above.
In-service activity for individuals holding Provisional or Part-Time Provisional certification, meeting one of the
education requirements (50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 69), can also be used by individuals
holding Part-Time Approval. Completion of the equivalent of one educational
requirement can be used by itself for renewal without the need for any occupational
experience. Completion of one-third of a requirement, along with two months
of appropriate occupational experience, will also allow for renewal of the Part-Time
Approval. Instances involving completion of one-third of a requirement will
not require approval by the District Certification Committee.
Education Requirements taken during the summer of the expiration year can be
split between the current and following year.
The State Certification Committee will evaluate and approve in-service activities being done on a statewide or
national basis and notify districts of approved items.
Two months of appropriate occupational experience must accompany Part-Time Approval in-service activities to allow
renewal.

RATIONALE
There are two distinct types of district in-service activity mentioned in the
certification code. Only individuals holding Part-Time Approval certification
use one type, which must be a minimum of ten hours in length. It will always
be referred to as Part-Time Approval in-service activity.
The second type of district in-service activity is utilized primarily by individuals holding Provisional or Part-Time
Provisional certification. This in-service activity is equivalent to a two-semester
credit university education course. This type of in-service activity can also
be used by individuals renewing Part-Time Approval certification.
