Certification Guideline 55
SUBJECT
Math or Science Courses - Part-Time Approval Certification
GUIDELINE DEFINITION
An occupational instructor may receive Part-Time Approval certification for a
math or science course that is part of the program for which the instructor is
eligible to hold certification.
EXAMPLE
Mary is eligible to hold certification for instructional area 442 (Welding). She
does not currently hold certification. District staff want Mary to teach course
31-804-321 (Shop Math), which is a supportive course in the welding program. Part-Time
Approval certification can be granted for course 31-804-321.
EXAMPLE
Bill is eligible to hold certification for instructional area 420 (Machine Shop).
He also holds a bachelors degree with a major in mathematics. District staff want
to assign him to teach course 31-804-321 (Shop Math). This course is only used
in the welding program. He could be certified to teach the course and he would
be granted Part-Time Provisional certification as a math instructor. He would
not be eligible to hold Part-Time Approval certification since course 31-804-321
is not part of the machine shop program.
RATIONALE
Math and science courses generally appear as supportive courses in programs. Guideline
27 allows occupational instructors to teach these courses if they are part of
the program that the occupational instructor is certified to teach. Occupational
instructors are allowed to hold Part-Time Approval certification.
